Edwards: The Excelencies of Christ pt 2

In comparing Christ, the lion and lamb, Edwards gives much thought to the glory that belongs to Christ as God the Son, and His humiliation as the lamb. With much consideration as to how we as Christians are to emulate Christ, we must look afresh at his glory and meditate in awe of the splendor over the Cross of Christ.

Paul in Philippians 2:3 writes, "Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves."

Edwards 1st point of 7 is:

"1. There do meet in Christ infinite highness and infinite condescension. Christ, as he is God, is infinitely great and high above all....King of kings...Lord of lords....higher than the heavens...the highest angels of heaven....all men...kings...nations are as the drop of the bucket...dust... nothing before him....Christ is the Creator and great Possessor of heaven and earth....sovereign Lord of all....His knowledge is with our bounds.... His wisdom is perfect....power infinite....riches...inexaustable. His majesty is infinitely awful." The works of Jonathan Edwards

Next time we will journey with Edwards into Christs' condescension. tbc

Edwards: The Excelency of Christ

Revelation 5:5-6 (context) Thoughts are Jonathan Edwards from The Works of Jonathan Edwards

"There is an admirable conjunction of diverse excellencies in Jesus Christ.

The lion and the lamb, though very diverse kinds of creatures, yet [each have] their particular excellencies. The lion...strength...majesty of his appearance and voice: the lamb excels in meekness...paitence...excelent nature...good for food...clothing...and...suitable to be offered in sacrifice to God....Christ is in this text compared to both; because the diverse excellencies of both wonderfully meet in him."

I will summarise his points....tbc
